By
Keith Lambert --
Well, 2008 is
already off and running at full steam here at Kore
Technologies. But before we get to that, a little recap of last year
is in order. First of all, 2007 was a great year for Kore, in fact
it was our best year ever! The majority of our existing clients saw
their businesses continue to prosper last year and that resulted in
the need for more products and services from Kore. Additionally, we
were fortunate to earn the business of many new clients, a high
percentage of whom purchased our
Kourier Integrator for U2 and
SQL Accelerator products. We see more and more
companies choosing to implement Microsoft SQL Server data
warehouses as a complement to their U2 applications for reporting
and data analysis, and our software has been very helpful for this
type of project.
Regarding DataFlo, it
continues to be the primary back office application for many
companies and it has proven to be a very capable and flexible
system, adapting to the changing needs of business and technology.
For this reason Kore continues to invest in DataFlo, so that we can
provide the most complete array of
DataFlo products and services available.
Our office relocation last
year was
another milestone for Kore. As we hired several new employees
to support our growth in products and services,
we had to move to a bigger and better
new office location (see picture insert). Everyone is so much
more comfortable now. Cubes are for Dilbert!
Back to 2008: January has
already come and gone and we are fully ramped up with so much to
talk about, which is reflected in the size of this newsletter. Just
take a
look at the super-sized Product News
Section. You will see we have made many enhancements to our products
and we are launching a new product called
webTeam PRO.
We are all excited about
the challenges that come with a new year and we are looking forward
to providing excellent products and services to you.
As always, if you have
any questions or if Kore can be of service to you, please
contact us.
The
27th Annual
International Spectrum MultiValue Conference and Exposition will
be in Newport Beach, California this year at the Marriott Newport
Beach Hotel, March 31 - April 4. This is the premier MultiValue
Business Developers Conference and Exhibition. If you are using any type of MultiValue technology
in your company you should attend. It's all here - the MultiValue
knowledge, resources, and technology to solve your business
challenges and enhance your MultiValue systems, so you can gain
competitive advantage, and maximize profitability.
This year’s Spectrum
conference is loaded with information about new options, new
technologies, and new products you can use to extend the value and
capability of your personal career and your MultiValue applications
Kore will host two
educational sessions this year, see the
conference schedule for session times.
Integrating a SQL
Server Data Warehouse with your MultiValue Database - In this
session you will learn why using a Microsoft SQL Server data
warehouse can improve your operations, and how easy it is to create
and maintain one using data from
your U2 database. We will demonstrate this using our
Kourier Integrator for
U2, and SQL
Accelerator products.
Integrating Freight
Management with your MultiValue Application - Find out what you
need to know about interfacing your application with FedEx, UPS, and
common carriers. These interfaces can be loaded with pitfalls,
problems, and false starts. See the pros and cons of creating these
interfaces and examples of how you can do it.
Look for Kore's booth in
the exhibition hall again this year and please stop by
and say hi. We will be showing product demonstrations of
Kourier Integrator for
U2, SQL
Accelerator, and our suite of
eCommerce Web
solutions. We will also have a daily drawing for very cool
prizes and other free gifts for everyone who stops by and talks with
us.
If you would like a
complementary pass to the exhibition hall, just bring a copy of
this article with you. We hope to see you there!

Here are
the highlights of the
latest
Kourier
and
KommerceServer
product features. Please call us to request the latest release or to
schedule an upgrade.
Kourier
Products
Kourier Integrator for U2
Kourier Integrator for U2 1.8.0 is
now available and includes many enhancements:
-
The Net Change system now supports
deleted items, thus removing the need to do periodic
full-refreshes when keeping an external system or application in
sync with a production system (e.g., a data warehouse ). The
Export Mode on the Schedules page now includes a new choice for
"Net Change with Deletes" option.
-
The Net Change system now supports
using distributed files on UniVerse systems. The distributed
file type helps make very large files more manageable from a
system administration perspective.
-
Enhanced the Quick Start tools to
allow a multi-part item-id (e.g., Company*Customer*InvoiceNo) to
be decomposed into its logical parts by adding additional rows
in a file's schema. The KT.SCHEMA2EXPORT command will use this
information to create separate fields in each export created.
-
Improved the Quick Start tools (KT.FILEUSAGE)
to support A-Type dictionaries on UniVerse when there are no
D-Types dictionaries available.
-
There are 2 new TCL Utilities that
support users who need to package the components for one or more
integrations on a source system and then move and deploy the
components for those integrations to a target system. The new
commands are:
-
Added Concurrency Control for FTP
and FILE type queues to support large files to be moved without
causing problems with an integrating application or program
trying to read a file before the transfer is completed. When a
Kourier message is sent to a FTP or FILE type target DSN it will
have a " .tmp" file extension until the file has completed
writing, then the file is changed to the final file name.
-
Added the ability to separate an
outbound XML document into multiple messages. This enables each
outbound transaction from KU2 to be seen as one or more
individual XML documents, which is sometimes required by
third-party applications for integration.
-
Added the ability to import XML
transactions into a U2 database using a command program in a
Kourier service to import files/transactions.
-
Added Binary Transfer option for
FTP file transfers This allows files to be moved in binary mode,
preserving the data exactly as it is stored, which is very
useful for some types of files and when moving data between UNIX
and Windows operating systems.
-
The user guide has been improved
and is now hosted
online at koretech.com. All product documentation will now
reside online and the default KU2 installation configuration
will use the hosted help files.
Kourier SQL Accelerator
Kourier Integrator Classic (for DataFlo Systems only)
The
current release of Kourier Integrator Classic is 4.6.1.
-
Added Concurrency Control for FTP
and FILE type queues to support large files to be moved without
causing problems with an integrating application or program
trying to read a file before the transfer is completed. When a
Kourier message is sent to a FTP or FILE type target DSN it will
have a " .tmp" file extension until the file has completed
writing, then the file is changed to the final file name.
-
Added Binary Transfer option for
FTP file transfers This allows files to be moved in binary mode,
preserving the data exactly as it is stored, which is very
useful for some types of files and when moving data between UNIX
and Windows operating systems.
-
Implemented several new protocols
available on the Data Source Names page: Secure FTP over SSL,
HTTP Get, HTTP Post, HTTPS Get, and HTTPS Post.
-
Introduced several new Conversion
Codes for use in Export Specifications:
-
@STRUCT allows normalization to be
disabled on a field-by-field basis.
-
@RECORD provides a way to extract
attributes, values and sub-values without writing a dictionary.
-
@CHANGE provides a way to change
one string to another.
-
@TEXT converts all system
delimiters (@AM, @VM, @SVM, and @TM) in the source
attribute/dictionary to a space character or another string.
Kourier
Forms Manager
The
current release of Kourier Forms Manager is 4.6.1.
Kourier Freight Control
The
current release of Kourier Freight Control is 4.6.1, and is now
fully integrated with Kore's Kourier framework. New features
include:
-
Integration with Kore's
Kourier
Forms Manager for improved forms handling (no need to
initialize each printer)
-
Integration with Kore's
BarTender Interface for printing of all labels. It
is now much
easier to customize labels, manage multiple label printers with
different label stocks for each work station, etc.
-
Integration with Kourier's
Messenger and logging functionality. This means that you can
automatically generate e-mail notifications of successful,
warning, and error transactions for UPS PLD transmittal, FedEx
Ship Manager Server messages, etc.
-
When combined with Kore's
Kourier
Publisher, Packing List and Export Documents may be
automatically sent in PDF format to trading partners, freight
forwarders, etc.
-
Automatic detection of Shipping
Station based on Computer Name or IP Address
-
A streamlined and simplified user
interface for carrier configuration
-
Smaller impact on baseline DataFlo
software components
-
Improved design and architecture
to support future integrations with Web Services, AES Direct and
more.
KommerceServer Products
KommerceServer
4.7 is available now.
KommerceServer
Architecture - General Framework
-
New framework provides for 3-tiered
development of Web applications with:
-
A rich user interface
for the Presentation Layer leveraging
Component
Art controls (editable grids, menus, trees, etc.).
-
Abstraction of
Application Layer using generated Business Objects, which
can be extended with custom methods and application rules.
-
The Data Access
Layer, which provides database independence and binds to the
Business Objects, providing the developer a way to retrieve and
update the data without knowing native syntax to the database.
-
New Object Security
Model provides a greater level of control while being easier to
implement and administer. Currently available only for the
webTeam PRO application.
Other applications will leverage the new security in future
releases.
-
Web Services enabled
as the API to KommerceServer. All inbound data feeds and
outbound transactions can be integrated with other business
systems via Web service methods.
-
Selectable Themes
allow you to apply a "skin" to change the look using a repository of themes
and master pages.
-
SQL-based document
repository and object linking. Implemented in
webTeam,
webSalesForce, and
webServiceCenter.
-
Added XSLT support
for e-mail notification of Web transactions. E-mail content and
layout can be user-defined using Extended Markup Language
Transformation.
webStorefront
-
Support for Special
Charge Items which are automatically added to the shopping cart
when the parent item is selected.
-
Added Make-Model-Year
support for manufacturers in the auto industry. Leverages AJAX
in new UI framework.
-
Support for Search
Engine Optimization (SEO) implemented in the database-driven
storefront with extended meta properties which are editable
within the catalog manager by product or by class.
webSalesForce
-
New Sales Rep Locator
page allows anonymous users to find contact information for a
sales rep based on user-defined rules (product, state, zip code,
etc.)
webTeam
PRO
We have released our
latest version of Web collaboration software, called webTeam PRO.
The PRO is for Professional Services as the product has been
significantly enhanced to support Project Billing and Management for Professional Services
Organizations (PSO). This product also takes full advantage of our

-- Happy 2008!
December was Panic Time in the shop – Again! Happens every year. I
usually get started or at least thinking about the presents I’m
going to make way back in August and between vacations, honey-do’s,
fishing, baseball, football, home remodeling (mine), did I mention
fishing, and making a bunch of cars, I try and finish the few
projects started and several I know I won’t get done in time. Maybe
one of my New Year's Resolutions for 2008 should be to start working
on Christmas Presents right after the Super Bowl. Four of the
presents I did get done this year are for my youngest grandson, my
newest nephew, my great nephew, and the last one for my Dentist’s
office, I made them little
tractor-trailer trucks that haul 3 cars
each, they are pretty neat as the car wheels lock the cars onto the
trailer. I test drove them and the cars actually do stay on
the trailer. I made them from a few pieces of Mahogany I had lying
around the shop. I got the plans for this tractor/trailer from my
Woodworkers club (San Diego Fine Woodworking Association) and had to
redesign them to fit the pieces of wood I had.
I have some exciting news
(for me anyway). I’m building a shop in my backyard as I have grown
too big for the garage. So far, I have built a retaining wall,
leveled the ground, and bought the wood and materials to build the
foundation and flooring. In the next month or two, hopefully I can
build the buildings, run electricity, and move in. I’m very excited
about this as it’s been a couple of years in planning and now is
becoming a reality.
Programmers, one of our
customers requested a new DataFlo Utility they can use to archive
Cost Versions. This may be something useful you can do for your
company too. These ancient Cost Versions are still referenced by the
Customer so Purging the old data was not an option but reducing the
number of records in the cost version file is very necessary for a
couple of reasons. On their system, the COST-VERSION file is so huge
that you cannot resize the file (not enough available disk space in
the tmp file system on their UNIX box) and doing any processing like
creating a new version, rolling up costs, and simply authorizing a
cost version takes a very long time. So, the utility we've designed
will simply flag the version as Historical and copy the version
being archived to a history file removing it from the COST-VERSION
file. Note, my customer is very good at using the wIntegrate Query
Builder and figured they could use it to look up the "Archived"
Standard Cost History but I was thinking that you could write a
pretty neat Inquiry screen where the Part# is entered and the screen
reads all of the Standard Cost Version and Historical Version
records and displays them (you don’t have to select the fields as it
can get the Cost Versions from the table and then simply read each
record). If this sounds interesting or useful please contact me.
Have a safe 2008.
Until next time please
remember, "Great Service to your Customer
is always rewarded".

New to the Kore Team - We've had a few new people join the
Kore team since our last newsletter.
Claudia
Sorensen - With her 28 years of DataFlo Experience, Claudia
brings a wealth of product and business knowledge to Kore. She is an
expert with the DataFlo MES modules and in fact, she developed the
Advanced Shipping, RF Physical, and Networking Labeling modules. She
also has extensive experience with all of the other DataFlo modules
and a good working knowledge of the Avanté product too. See
the original
announcement for more information.
Janinne
Meloni
- You have probably already spoken with Janinne if you have called
Kore in the past few months. She became our new Office Manager last
November and she has been busy getting to know our clients and
learning our office procedures. Jannine came to to us all the
way from the East Coast, Boston to be specific, and had this to say
about joining Kore: "So far, I am most impressed with Kore’s
commitment to excellence in service to their customers. I studied
business administration in college and have a deep appreciation for
customer service. Kore is one of those rare companies, devoted to
their customers and employees and I’m happy to be a part of this
culture. It’s a great fit."
That she is a big (and I mean BIG) Red Sox fan makes it interesting
because the majority of us in the San Diego office are Padre fans,
which can lead to some fun conversations. "I grew up cheering
for the Red Sox and since Kore is Padres land, I get a lot of good
natured teasing. Baseball is such a great equalizer and we all share
the love of the game,” said Janinne.
Welcome to Kore Janinne!

Exporting
Date-Time Stamps Using Kourier Integrator
By Jeremy Segal -
a common requirement when exporting data to a MS SQL Server database
is to stamp the exported row (record) with a date-time stamp. DBAs will
often use this information when they analyze the data. Another similar
requirement is to export an existing date and time fields from a
UniData/UniVerse record to a single datetime column in a SQL Server database.
This tech tip will show you how to setup date-time stamps for on
your SQL Server database and what you need to do to export existing
date-time stamps that exist in your UniData/UniVerse Database. These techniques will work using either
Kourier Integrator for U2 or
Kourier Integrator Classic.
To find out more,
read the full Tech Tip >>
New
Summary page - With all of the
DataFlo Products and Services that Kore provides, our DataFlo
clients suggested that we make it easier to find them. Therefore, we
have created a new Web page that summarizes everything in one place
your convenience. This is an excellent page to go to when you are
looking for anything DataFlo related and it's grouped by category:
DataFlo Specific products, Web Solutions integrated to DataFlo,
Custom DataFlo Modules, Professional Services, and Utilities. From
there you can link to other pages for more detail.

Regardless of whether your
company plans to continue using DataFlo for many years or just wants
to keep their options open for a potential migration to another ERP
application in the future, the bottom line is: KSP provides
better DataFlo support at a lower cost.

the experts will answer it and we'll post some of
the best questions here too.
It is getting close to Year End
Processing time for many companies out there and Paul Trebbien would like to
answer a couple of questions he always gets from our
DataFlo users:
Question: How do I roll that period
in the DataFlo Inventory Controls to 1 in the New Year prior to running
the Year End Process?
Answer:
Temporarily change the Fiscal Year
Structure so that the year will be the new year (e.g., 2008) and the
Date Range for period 1 to 1/1 to 1/31 of the new year, now change
the period in the Inventory Module Controls screen to 1, and then
change the Fiscal Year Structure back to the way it was. This is
covered in our Tech Tip called
Getting Ready for DataFlo Fiscal Year End
for more info.
Question:
How do I have the year end physical
results post into period 12 when the adjustments are actually posted
after the ending date?
Answer:
A couple of thoughts here, if no other
Inventory Movements have occurred then simply add a couple of days
to period 12 in the Fiscal Year Structure, Generate Inventory
Journals and change the Fiscal Year Structure back. Another option
is to have your programmer change the date on those stock records
that were generated by the Post Cycle Count Adjustments process to
12/31/08 and then you can Generate Inventory Journals, but be sure
to use the internal date format when changing the dates. Note: later
versions of DataFlo will allow you to enter the Date when you post
the adjustments.
